Girl Walk // All Day played at the Glawgow Youth Film Festival in February, and despite the pouring rain, the crowd came out to dance (umbrellas and all).

To celebrate this extraordinary film, Glasgow Youth Film Festival took Girl Walk // All Day to the streets of Glasgow on Wednesday 13 February 2013. 150 people attended the screening, despite the pouring rain! This short documentary discusses the people behind the project and highlights from the night.

This project was developed in partnership with Pidgin Perfect, an award-winning creative studio based in Glasgow. Pidgin Perfect has wide ranging experience in developing and delivering large scale public creative engagements. Most recently they represented Scotland at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale where they designed a series of theatrical events to bring local communities together.

This event was made possible by the following organisations:

Glasgow Film Festival
Pidgin Perfect
Glasgow City Council’s Stalled Spaces Initiatives and Area Committee Grants
Young Scot’s Creative Enterprise Fund
o2’s Think Big fund
Dance HQ
Dance House
#1 Blud Crew

Thanks so much to our enthusiastic fans and the fantastic crew at GFF.

How To Host A Girl Walk // All Day Screening
Here at Girl Walk HQ, we get a lot of emails asking if a person, organization or venue can host a screening. The answer is YES! Here’s how to go about it.
Find a venue: The first step is to reach out and find a venue you think would be a good fit*. We’ve shown the film indoors and outdoors at venues from 50 people to 2,000+ people, so it’s really about the night of the week and how many people you think you can pull in your town/city. If it’s warm, also consider outdoor screenings in public parts of town. Make sure the venue has at least 1 large screen installed in the venue — the bigger the better — and a good PA system. Or, make sure you are able to provide both of these elements.
Make it Yours: In the screenings we have produced, we work to create unique, immersive events that are venue-specific to each location. If a space is loft-like or gallery-like with big, white walls, think about having multiple projections at once. Consider what a pre-show might look like: other videos? Local dancers/dance troupes doing a live performance? A DJ’ed dance party right after the film? Sparklers? Anything you can dream up is oin the table. Straightforward screenings are also a-okay; we just don’t want you to feel limited. For inspiration and other examples, check out some of our past events and photos of screenings.
The Nitty Gritty: Once these pieces are in place, let us know what you have in mind, and we can work through administrative / event fees and other event logistics.
Getting You The Film + Getting the Word Out: We then provide you with the film either on Blu-ray, HD Cam, or as a hi-res digital download. (We discourage you from screening from a DVD). We also provide an official press release, hi-res film stills and a logo to help with promotion of your event. Lastly, we help publicize the event through our social media channels (twitter, facebook, instagram) and active newsletter base, though we do look to the host to lead the majority of the PR efforts for your own local audience.
OK! So, are you ready to plan a Girl Walk screening? Get in touch with us at hi@girlwalkallday.com
*Previous venues include: courtyards, public parks, the beach, art galleries, lofts, restaurants, concert venues, movie theaters, football fields, outdoors on a giant screen in the middle of a fjord, projected on the underside of a bridge, etc.

While our tiny team can’t make it out to every screening of Girl Walk // All Day, there’s nothing better than knowing a screening is happening somewhere out there in the world, and seeing our phones and emails light up with tweets and letters from impassioned fans. This is what happened Sunday night, when Girl Walk took over Yellow Jacket Stadium in Austin, TX. The sparklers flew, the dance party erupted, and the kind words began to pour in. A member of the audience wrote in to say,

Hey Makers of Girl Walk // All Day,Just wanted to say that I was a member of the lucky crowd that got to see your movie last night at Cinema East in Austin. The experience was simply unbelievable. I’ve been to a lot of CE screenings, and there has never been one remotely like this.  Starting at about 10 minutes into the film, people began getting up from their blankets to go dance in the middle of the field. As time went on, more and more people got up. You really could feel something stirring in the air. My heart was BEATING. I wanted to dance from the start, but my girlfriend and I stayed put because we didn’t want to stop watching the movie (loved every second of it).  Finally, about halfway through, I turned to her and said, ‘if we don’t go up there, we’ll regret it forever.’  It really was something special dancing under the screen. Everyone was laughing and flailing about, but still totally locked on the movie.  IT WAS SO MUCH FUN. It felt triumphant. There was nothing but love out on that field…I really feel like there’s no limits to what this movie could do for the world of dance, but more importantly, what it could do for the world.

And then he shared this video he took of people dancing and running around with sparklers at the end of the evening.

This brings TEARS TO OUR EYES. Thank you to Maggie Lea and Carlyn Hudson for making the magic happen.
See more photos from Sunday night on Facebook.
And! There’s another screening coming up in Austin at the University of Austin, TX, outdoors in the courtyard at the Perry Castaneda Library on Friday, August 31st that is free and open to the public. [See details here]
