Last night we had another stellar screening — this time at the East Village’s The Wild Project — a 90-seat environmentally-friendly theater that welcomed us with very open arms. When we first visited the space, we saw the sizable stage up front and knew it’d be the perfect opportunity to invite our friends, the flex group Street’s Finest, to stir up something fun before the screening. They came out like a tornado, with 10 minutes of storytelling through bone-breaking, pausing, miming and an entire vocabulary of movements that had us floored.
At the movie’s finale, nearly the entire audience rushed the stage, dancing through Central Park with our cast, right on through the credits.
Thanks to all who came. The music film genre has exploded in recent years, inspiring the Philadelphia Film Society to collaborate with XPN (University of Pennsylvania’s radio staion) to create the first-ever XPN Music Film Festival, April 26th-29th. Starting tomorrow, they’ll bring twenty films, both classic and new, about topics ranging from Paul Simon to Gustav Mahler to Penn’s Annenberg Center, to celebrate the stories behind the sounds that move us.
Girl Walk // All Day is thrilled to be part of this inaugural festival, and we’ll have screening (and dance party late into the night) at Philly’s World Cafe Live on Friday night, April 27th. The evening is presented by Philebrity, and will feature a dance performance by local troupe Body Dreamz, and live DJ sets to boogie to by Bruce Warren and Robert Drake.

We’re still catching up on sharing photos from our screenings over the last few weeks. Here are some glimpses of our first outdoor show in LA in the courtyard of Space 15 Twenty. We had 2 big screens, some blankets to keep warm, and Umami Burger next door serving up some damn good patties. To add to the fun, we had free Red Bull, Girl Walk’s custom tattly, and 2 gorgeous and enormous balloons from Geronimo Balloons.
Special thanks to the staff at Space 15 Twenty who helped us put on this awesome show! See the full set here. We’re still catching up on sharing photos from our screenings over the last few weeks. “Powered by Joy,” The Reverend Daniel Simons of Trinity Church recaps Sunday night’s screening at St. Paul’s Chapel

The Reverend Daniel Simons of Trinity Church wrote about Sunday night’s dance lesson and screening at St. Paul’s Chapel in the Trinity newsletter today:

The pleasure and poignancy of the film arises both in the exuberance of the street dancing, and in how passersby interact, or don’t.  A few people dare to smile at the dancers, and a couple even dare to shuffle their feet with them.  But given that this is New York, most people look straight through the spectacle as if it didn’t exist, or look away, or hunker down on their sandwich or newspaper, or step away warily from the dancers, as if they were contagious (as in fact they are).  The film is a wonderful piece of popular artistry that is going viral around the world.  It’s pure joy.

About 200 folks turned up for the class – Nearly all had never been to St. Paul’s before – most probably had not been to church since childhood if at all.

John, one of the main characters in the film (“The Creep”), taught some wonderful freestyle moves. The heart of his teaching was easy participation and unedited joy, the soul’s language spoken through the body.

The film gathered even more people into the room, about 300, many of whom just kept dancing along with the story on the screen.  The air was electric with a kind of childlike freedom.   Even though I was nursing a cold, I found my feet moving irresistibly. There’s something about watching Joy happen around you that inspires more of it - and conversely, as the film’s footage showed, that grim determination to be somber and focused and even unhappy has a tremendous grip when it is adopted by the masses.

See the full newsletter.

Thank you to Daniel, Emily Bloeker and the whole team at Trinity Wall St. for inviting us to St. Paul’s for a screening.
